Outsiders assume Bangka Night Market is one market. It isn't. It's the collective name for a few streets around Longshan Temple — Guangzhou St, Wuzhou St, Huaxi St — each with its own stalls and its own temperament, with the entrance across from MRT Longshan Temple and the temple itself at No. 211 Guangzhou St as your landmark. Three misconceptions, taken apart.
Misconception one: Bangka is Huaxi St
Huaxi St Tourist Night Market has the roof and the gate — it's the section tourists recognise. But locals mostly eat on Guangzhou and Wuzhou: open-air, dense, a notch cheaper, about NT$50 a snack and a bowl of noodle soup under NT$70. Do both sections or you haven't done Bangka. Stalls open around 6pm and most run to 11 or midnight; old stalls close when they sell out, so arrive before 9 to eat everything.
Misconception two: only tourists left
Longshan Temple is lit at night and the incense on Guangzhou St never stops. After 9 the worshippers, the shoppers and the strollers blend, and the tourist share is far lower than Ximending. Walk toward Xichang St and the herbal-tea stalls of Herb Alley run late, around NT$30 a cup — Wanhua's way of cutting grease. This night moves a beat slower than Ximen; old Taipei isn't in a hurry.
Honestly: old-town lanes are dim after 11. Walk main roads with company, as in any old city.
Misconception three: nowhere to go after eating
The most unfair one. Right in the market, Lu Cheng Fang Traditional Massage at No. 235 Guangzhou St has 2,000+ reviews at 4.9 — the smoothest finish after eating; Zhonghua Wellness at No. 24-2 Huaxi St (700+) for a foot massage before you leave. The old-town entries on the Wanhua massage list run cheaper than Ximending.
For a drink, old Bangka is quieter than Ximending. Shaojiu Shiyu Wanhua at No. 204 Bangka Blvd (1,700+ reviews) is izakaya-style; Ka-la̍h-á Taiwanese Izakaya at No. 68-4 Dongyuan St (1,000+) does Taiwanese small plates, with Xishe Izakaya next door at No. 68-1 as backup; Wanzhufang Izakaya at No. 271 Wanda Rd (600+, 4.9) is a longer walk but worth it. For bar density, walk fifteen minutes north to Ximending — the Wanhua bar list covers both ends.
Getting around and getting home
MRT Longshan Temple on the Bannan line, last train around midnight; Ximen is fifteen minutes on foot. Parking lots on Xiyuan Rd fill fast — don't drive. After drinks, taxi or designated driver; old-town roads are narrow.
For the Ximending end of the night, see Ximending late night — the two pieces together make a full Wanhua evening. District overview on the Wanhua guide.
