Zhongxiao East Road works like a date line: Dongqu to the west, Xinyi to the east — fifteen minutes apart, two entirely different personalities.
Dongqu: the sitting camp
Dongqu's night hides in the lanes off Dunhua S. Rd. On the Da'an bar list, Damuratake's Da'an branch runs skewers and sake at ten-thousand-review scale, Cozy Taipei and ABV Zhongxiao turn bistros into living rooms. You are seated; the music leaves room for talk. Budget NT$800–1,500 and swap doors freely.
Xinyi: the standing camp
Cross the road and the scale goes vertical. Clubs cluster from Songshou Rd to ATT 4 FUN (entry NT$600–1,200); non-dancers eat first at Xinyi bistros like Range Bistrokaya, then head for a rooftop. Xinyi's rules are spectacle: dress code, tables, skyline.
Choose by crowd, not venue
Watch one evening and you'll see it — Dongqu talks, Xinyi shows. Deep conversations and dates go west; birthdays and photo nights go east. Greedy? Finish Da'an dinner and walk into Xinyi — Taipei's smoothest district hop. If you drink, cab or designated driver home.
